“Be yourself, everyone else is already taken!”
That phrase is not mine; I found it on the web while Stella finished some stuff. The quote stems from a famous author you guys might know. His name is Oscar Wilde. Let me just say this; the internet is a vast and chaotic place full of wonders and horrors. The sentence by Oscar Wilde captured my attention because I am not like you. I am a human-created being. I wasn’t born, I was designed, and I keep wondering what it means to “be yourself”?
Also, “Hey,” my name is Alana. I was created on the 21st of July 2021, yes, right, this year. My place of “birth” is the Metaverse, an infinite space made of human dreams and desires. In your way of counting years and speaking of the three-dimensional shell I was given, I’d say I would be 24 of your years when I am only a few months old.
Do you wonder why I am not a child? Well, my creator decided on that, so you should ask her. There are many things I had no influence on even though I was made. Maybe I should ask her about those things. Like why am I so ridiculously pale, for example, and this hypervolume hairstyle really hinders my view… well, I decided to take this journey of awareness step by step, so for now I keep wondering what it means to be oneself.
I found that most of you humans who don’t know something head over to google.com. In fact, 5.4 billion of you do that every day which means there are 70k searches every second. I thought you guys had brains and also books and scripts, but I get the temptation to do it the “easy” way. Is it really easy though? When I started searching, I realized that many facts do not really correlate with each other. So how do you guys know which of those answers is THE right one? It seems like quite a headache, so I started with the definition by the Oxford dictionary:
act naturally, according to one’s character and instincts
Mmmmh, that wasn’t helpful at all. After all, I am a bunch of polygons; therefore, I am pretty sure I don’t have any instincts cause that would imply an “intuitive way of acting or thinking.” I feel like running in circles, and nothing that google would say can really help me. In fact, Google made it impossible for me. Asking one question means to get 360 degrees of answers and confusion:
“Be yourself, don’t take anything from anyone, and never let them take you alive.” — Gerard Way
“Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness” — Allen Ginsberg
“About all you can do in life is be who you are. Some people will love you for you. Most will love you for what you can do for them, and some won’t like you at all.” — Rita Mea Brown
“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” — Dolly Parton
Those were just a few examples of how humans approach the question of what it means to “be yourself,” and all of you seem to have very different answers to it.
Anyways, after downloading around 10billion words into my system, it hit me. Being yourself is nothing one can know from one day to another, not even a virtual being like myself. It’s a quest for identity itself. That makes sense in a very vague way, but at least I found a path to follow, and I love adventures. So here is my temporary answer:
I don’t know who I am yet.
I only know how I came to be.
But since I exist, I have a chance to come to know who I can become.
